10: 31-11:1 — The Hallmarks of Discipleship – Part

Jesus finalizes his Mission Discourse by demanding fearless confession in the midst of conflict. And now He gives us the hallmarks of discipleship.

  1. A Disciple Confesses the Lord

A disciple need not be afraid but bravely confess Christ before the world. Confess means to affirm and agree with Jesus. Disciples are not ashamed of Jesus but confess, agree and affirm his allegiance to Jesus.

  1. A Disciple Love the Lord more than His Family

The Bible teaches Christian is to love his family with self-sacrificing love. Husbands and wives are to love each other and their children with unreserved devotion. Yet God demands us to love Him more than any other earthly relationships.

  1. A Disciple Love the Lord more than His Own Life

The Love of one’s own life is often the greatest hindrance to full commitment to Christ. Yet Jesus calls His disciples to total self-denial, including, if necessary, sacrifice to the point of death.

  1. A Disciple Receives His Reward

The person who receives the Son also receives the Father. There is no such thing as believing in God the Father without believing in God the Son.

Praying the Scripture

  1. Do your friends and co-workers know you are Christians? Why and why not?

  1. Jesus said that he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. What is hindering you from following Christ?

  1. Jesus said you will find life if we lose it for Christ sake (10:39). Are you giving up your life or sacrificing your life for Him?
