The psalm is difficult to interpret and is debated. One view is that the gods are referring to human judges (cf. Ex. 22:8, 9, 28; Judg. 5:8, 9). This is unlikely since these gods are different than men (vv. 6-7). Also, the Bible often talks about a heavenly council where God presides over this council involving angels (Job 1:6-12, 1 Kg. 22:19-23, Dan. 4:17). This council affects human affairs. Another view is that the gods refer to fallen angels who rule over the nations through idolatry. To understand this, you must understand that the word god (Elohim) is also used to refer to any spirit being in the spirit world including angels (Ps. 8:5) and sometimes even disembodied human souls (1 Sam. 28:13). But Yahweh is the one and only true God: the creator and ruler of these gods/angels/spirit beings. These angels were put in charge to rule the world after humans rejected God’s direct rule at the tower of Babel (Deut. 32:8-9, 17). But these angels also rebelled against God and enticed rebellious humans to worship them instead of Yahweh (Col. 1:16, Eph. 1:21, Deut. 32:8-9); therefore God will defeat them and reclaim the nations/world from these demons/fallen angels. This psalm is God’s declaration of judgement against these fallen angels/gods and His eventual, direct rule over the nations (v. 8).

 

The brokenness of this world does not just extend to the human world, but also the angelic world. God’s original design was for His two families, the angelic and human families, to rule the earth, but both families rebelled; therefore, God will correct this rebellion. God’s focus is not just about defeating evil, arrogant humans, but also evil arrogant angels. He will accomplish their defeat and renew heaven and earth through Jesus, who is sent by God, the second power of Heaven, seated at the right hand of God (Col. 3:1) and the ruler of angels and humans. He is the second person in the triune, spirit Godhead (John 10:34), who is the ruler and creator of all spirit beings. He will restore and reconcile heaven and earth to God (Col. 1:20), by judging evil and permanently cast them out of His new universe. We worship this almighty God, Jesus. Although, it doesn’t look like it now, but be sure Jesus will come back and change the universe forever. Be in awe and bow down on your knees to the king of the universe, worship and serve Jesus alone.
