22 Dec 2016, Psalm 28 诗篇 28, God is Strength and Shield

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 28

Theme                      : God is Strength and Shield

  1. God Destroys the Wicked (1–5). God is a rock, a place of security and strength for the righteous, but for the wicked, he is a place of terror. He will destroy them and not build them up.
  1. God Delivers the Righteous (6-9). The righteous can be confident that God will hear their prayers for deliverance. They can trust God and their hearts can rejoice. God will save David, His anointed king and also bless all of His people.

Praying the Scripture

God is a rock for the righteous, but a terror for the wicked. Though there are many enemies in the world against God’s people, they will triumph over their enemies because God is their strength and shield. This truth will be more dear to those believers who face persecution. May we pray for all our persecuted brothers and sister around the world, for their faith to be strong in God, who is their shield and strength.

27, God is Our Light and Salvation

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 27

Theme                      : God is Our Light and Salvation

  1. God is Our Salvation (1–3). God is a loyal God who will protect David since He promised David to be king. Because of David’s confidence in God, he is not afraid of his enemies who want to take his life.
  1. God is Our Ultimate Desire (4). Despite all the troubles that David have faced in life, his worship of God is unwavering. His ultimate desire is to know God’s greatness/beauty more and more.
  1. God is Our Deliverer (5–14). Since God has asked us to love Him, He will not withdraw His love from us when we seek to love Him. His love is greater and more faithful than the love of earthly parents. We can be sure of His loyalty; therefore, we can wait for God to deliver us as we pray.

Praying the Scripture

When we have a singular focus to worship God according to His greatness, we can have joy in tough circumstances, even when our physical lives are in danger (Matt. 5:10-12). Such amazing, indestructible life can only be the result of our singular, passionate worship. Pray that you have will this singular, passionate worship of God like David no matter what the circumstances are.

26, The Innocent Pleads for Redemption

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 26

Theme                       : The Innocent Pleads for Redemption

  1. Affirming Self-Innocence (1–5). This psalm, along with psalms 27 and 28 all center on God’s temple/sanctuary. In this psalm, the believer prays for God to search him and affirm his innocence. One way that he is innocent is because he does not associate himself with evil men who are hypocrites, liars and evildoers.
  1. Affirming Love for God (6–8). The believer affirms his love and worship of God. He is not a hypocrite, but is thankful for God and tells others of God’s great deeds. He worships God at the altar of His temple. He is innocent of evil.
  1. Affirming Trust in God to Answer (9–12). Because of his worship of God and uprightness, he pleads with God to save his life and not destroy him along the wicked. This plead for deliverance is not out of self-righteous attitude, but based on God’s loyalty that God has committed to the believer. This loyalty is gracious given. Once loyalty is established, God is faithful to maintain this loyalty. Because of God’s faithfulness, the believer is assured of physical security on earth, and his privilege to join other believers in blessing/praising God forever in God’s future kingdom.

Praying the Scripture

Believers are graciously accepted by God based upon God’s grace, not based upon their perfect righteousness, but once believers are graciously accepted by God, they need to turn away from evil and humbly trust God and depend on God to deliver them from harm on earth. If believers commit evil, they will be disciplined by God and may even die for their sins if they are serious (Rom. 8:13; 1 Cor. 11:30). As believers, let us turn away from evil deeds. Fear God’s discipline. If you are innocent, God will answer your prayers and deliver you and give you justice.

19 Dec 2016, Psalm 25 诗篇 25, An Alphabet of Entreaty 恳求神

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 25

Theme                       : An Alphabet of Entreaty

The Hebrew alphabet, with an occasional irregularity, supplies the framework of the psalm, in which the pressure of enemies, the need of guidance and the burden of guilt take turns to be the dominant concern. The tone is subdued, and the singer’s trust is shown in patient waiting rather than the outburst of joy that sometimes marks the climax of such a psalm. Right outside the alphabetic scheme, the final verse claims for Israel what David has petitioned for himself, so making of a personal plea a hymn for the whole congregation. [1]

Praying the Scripture

This psalm describes the life of believers well. We battle against enemies outside of us and enemies within us. We are no match for both enemies. Victory can only come through our patient dependence/prayer upon God, who alone can empower and guide us to overcome. Be devoted to prayer if you want power and victory over both enemies. You must also live righteously for God to answer you (25:21). Righteous living is not self-righteous, I-can-rely-on-my-righteousness living. Righteous living is one who humbly obeys God and when he sins, he is sad and asks God for forgiveness and power to overcome. God will answer the prayers of such righteous person and bless his children. May you stay in God’s blessing and grace.

[1] Derek Kidner, Psalms 1–72, p.  133.

17 Dec 2016, Psalm 24 诗篇 24, The King of Glory 荣耀之王

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 24

Theme                      : The King of Glory

  1. God Owns the World (1–2). God created the world; therefore He is the rightful master and owner of the world. He is everyone’s landlord.
  1. God Requires Holiness (3–6). Every person/generation who wish to continue to live in His world and see God’s face must be holy just as He Holy. The implication is that those who are not holy will be kicked out of His Holy earth and His hill/temple, which is His worldwide headquarter.
  1. God Will Triumph (7–10). Although unholy people occupy His Holy earth now, God will be victorious and decisively defeat them in battle and kick them out of His Holy earth. The meek shall inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5).

Praying the Scripture

You must understand the big picture of the Bible. Ever since Eden, God’s original kingdom on earth, was ruined, God has been on a mission to reclaim lost paradise and rid the earth of sin and death. This psalm states He will be victorious. We have already seen the beginning of this victory in Jesus’ death and resurrection. The victory will be consummated when He returns. Look forward to this righteous kingdom. Clothe yourself in the righteousness of Jesus and live your life in righteousness by the power of the Spirit. Those who do not are without Christ and a new life through the Holy Spirit will not inherit God’s restored earth.

23, God is a Loving Ruler

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 23

Theme                      : God is a Loving Ruler

  1. God the Shepherd (1–4). A shepherd is a ruler (2 Sam. 7:7). God is a loving ruler as depicted through a caring shepherd. In Him, we do not want/lack anything that is necessary for the good of our soul. He leads us in right paths and restores our souls even in this broken world/valley of shadow of death. When we face evil, God is there to comfort us, help us, and yes, even to discipline us when we need it. Rod is for discipline (2 Sam.7:14) or for protection to beat wild animals/enemies. Staff is for comfort and a symbol of authority (Is. 14:5). It is used to guide sheep. This promise of God’s loving care is for all believers in all times. Because of this promise believers can have the greatest confidence and joy in God.
  1. God the Host (5–6). The believer is pictured as a guest at God’s table in His house. He is a king who lovingly provides for us. Back then, to have a meal is not just a casual social event, but communicated deep commitment and friendship. The believer is confident that God will bless him all the days of his life even in times of evil. God will vindicate him even in the presence of his enemies. He will live with God forever in perfect bliss in God’s place/eternal kingdom on earth.

Praying the Scripture

This picture of God as a loving ruler is fully displayed in the person of Jesus, who loves His people to the point of dying for them. Not only does Jesus die for His subjects but He also cares for them on earth. He promises to give our souls rest if we follow Him (Matt. 11:28-30). He also rebuked His apostles when they were in sin; but His love never departed from them. God is a loving, gentle, and humble God. Do you view God as such, or do you see God as a harsh slave-driver? May your view of God be correct! May you have a loving, vital relationship with God, your loving and caring shepherd/king!

22, Winning the Nations through the Cross

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 22

Theme                      : Winning the Nations through the Cross

  1. The Power of Darkness (1–21). It is the Messiah himself, not David, who is speaking in this psalm (cf. Ps. 2:7-9). The NT ascribes various sayings in this psalm directly to Jesus, not David (Matt. 27:46; John 19:24; Heb. 2:12). If you want to know what Jesus was thinking, praying and saying while He was on the cross, you can read this psalm. In suffering, Jesus expresses perplexity and longing for God to answer and deliver Him. This is a natural expression in suffering, not a sinful doubt on Jesus’ part. We too can express such perplexity and longing in suffering. It is not a sign of weakness of faith, but of trust and endurance.
  1. Victory over Darkness (3–4). Though the devil and his demons thought they were winning by crucifying Jesus, but in reality the cross was their dome (1 Cor. 2:8). Through the cross, God reclaims His direct rule over the nations through Jesus. The nations were ruled directly by the devil and his demons, but now God is reclaiming the nations through the cross, one person at a time. This is why Jesus gave the Great Commission to every Christian.

Praying the Scripture

This is an amazing testimony of God’s way of reclaiming the world: glory through suffering, victory through temporary defeat. Praise God for His amazing plan and providence. Great is the Lord, worthy of our praise. He is a loving king, who is in the process of restoring eden/His kingdom, on earth. The world is moving in one direction in history—being ruled by Jesus. Christians are not called to spread God’s kingdom through politics, but through the gospel. Jesus will establish His kingdom on earth when He returns. We establish God’s kingdom right now on earth by spreading the gospel so that all peoples will be in His kingdom when He returns. God has a big plan for this world and we get to be part of it. This is amazing! Worship the king!

21, Praising God’s Power through the King

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 21

Theme                       : Praising God’s Power through the King

  1. The King and God (1–7). This is speaking of the messianic king who will be bestowed with eternal reign, splendor and majesty. Only the ultimate Davidic king can receive such praise.
  1. The King and His Enemies (8–12). When the king appears, He will destroy all His enemies, no one can hide from Him. His shear, righteous wrath will be on display. This hope will be fulfilled when Jesus returns to earth.
  1. Praise to God (13). When all enemies will be destroyed, God’s people will praise His power to execute righteous judgment on evil people (Rev. 6:10).

Praying the Scripture

Although Jesus came as a lowly human baby without any authority, however, after His resurrection, He was given all authority over all of heaven and earth, that is, over all mankind and angels (Matt. 28:18). When He returns He will display fully all His majesty and splendor and power. In the end, Jesus wins. He will triumph over satan and his people. Rejoice that you belong to king Jesus. Praise His might over evil. He is your deliverer and refuge.

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 20

Theme                      :Victorious King

  1. Prayer for the King (1–5). This psalm is closely connected to psalm 21. The congregation appeals to God to give victory to David the king over their foreign enemies. The people of God make this petition because they know their welfare is connected to the king. The king is the agent or channel of God’s blessing to the people. Just as the messianic king is the channel of ultimate blessing to God’s people.
  1. The King’s Assurance (6–8). King David is 100% certain God will preserve him because God has promised in 2 Samuel 7:12-17. The king encourages the congregation to put their ultimate trust in God, not in weapons of war. Although they uses weapons, but they shall not put ultimate hope in them.
  1. Congregation Response (9). In closing, the congregation echoes the prayer of the king. They put their ultimate trust in God for victory in war over their enemies. They appeal to God to answer and honor His promise.

Praying the Scripture

The believer’s life is one that ultimately depends on God for victory through prayers and at the same time actively uses resources around him to gain victory over enemies. It is a life of having human responsibility and also trusting in God’s sovereignty. Pray that you will have wisdom not to neglect either prayer or human responsibility to gain victory over obstacles, such as human enemies or your own sinful nature.

12 Dec 2016, Psalm 19 诗篇 19, The Revelation of God 神的启示

Scripture Reading  : Psalm 19

Theme                      : The Revelation of God

  1. Universal Revelation (1–6). This section speaks of God’s universal revelation to mankind in every place, in every age, and in every person. Even though mankind cannot see God, they know God’s existence through His created world. Romans 1:20 states mankind can also know some basic characteristic of God such as His righteousness and goodness. Such universal revelation can only condemn mankind, not rescue them. Universal revelation is designed to point mankind to His scriptural revelation for salvation.
  1. Scriptural Revelation (7–14). God’s scriptural revelation is referred to as law, testimony, precepts, fear, commandment and rules. They are the only means of revelation by which a person can be saved and live correctly under God’s dominion (John 6:63). Whoever follows His scriptural revelation will be blessed, whoever does not will stay in condemnation. For this reason, God’s word is better than gold, sweeter than honey.

Praying the Scripture

Can you truly say in your heart that God’s word is better than gold and sweeter than honey or anything else the world can offer? Has the things of the world dull your heart? Or you are just spiritually sluggish? Pray that God will revive your soul through the daily reading of His truth. Set your hope in His truth and kingdom. May you view God’s law as a reflection of God’s character and care for you, not something burdensome. He loves our soul, that’s why He gave His law to us. God’s law is something to be loved and treasured. Of course, due to progressive revelation, Christians follow the law of Christ, not the Mosaic Law (1 Cor. 9:21). Both have the two greatest commandments in common: love God and your neighbors (Matt. 22:36-40).
