  1. The Proper Teaching on loving your Enemy

It is a clear teaching of the OT that “You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord” (Lev 19:18). Israelites were commanded to help their fellow countrymen as well as their enemy by returning a lost ox, sheep, donkey, or other such animal to its owner (Ex 23:4–5). The “enemy” spoken of in Exodus 23 is not the enemy soldier on the battlefield, but an individual who in some way is antagonistic. Jesus is speaking here about personal standards of righteousness, not civil law. So, a neighbor is anyone who is in need.

  1. The Perversion of the teaching on Loving your Enemy

Despite clear revelation, rabbinic tradition had perverted OT teaching by omitting “as yourself” from the law of loving your neighbor and narrowed the meaning of “neighbor” to their own kind. Hence Gentiles were not considered neighbors. Furthermore, they added “hate your enemy” (5:43b) which was not found in OT.

  1. The Prospective on Loving your Enemy

Jesus teaches that we are not only to love our enemy, but also pray for them. Anyone can love the people who love them, but like God who gives sunlight and rain to both good and evil, we are to love even those who hate us.

Praying the Scripture

  1. For most of us, it is very difficult to love our enemy. The way to overcome this is to first pray for them. That can be difficult even for us who want to obey God. Yet it is not impossible. Once we start praying for them, our heart starts to change and step by step, we imitate the Lord who sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

  1. The Bible is clear that God is love. As children of God we must reflect his character. 1 Jn 4:7 says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” Pray that we will love like God.

  1. It is amazing to note that the Jews omitted certain parts of the law to suit themselves. Are we not doing the same if we choose what we want to obey and ignore the rest to suit our own lifestyle? Pray that we would respect the authority of the whole counsel of God.
