Theme                            : God’s Strategy for Church Growth

 

  1. Purity of the church. After the death of Ananias and Sapphira, “none of the rest”, or unbelievers, dared to join the church, for fear of divine judgment. But at the same time, the church grew because God added genuine believers in great numbers.
  1. Power of the truth. The Apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit and performed great miracles. The purpose of miracles was to authenticate the Gospel message preached by the Apostles, and not to produce faith in unbelievers, since those who did not believe did not dare to join the church (v13).
  1. Persecution of the church. At this stage, persecution of the church was beginning, and the Apostles were imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. Historically, persecution of the church only strengthened it, because God used persecution to maintain the purity of the church.
  1. Priority in obedience. The night before, they were miraculously rescued from prison by an angel, who told them that they must go into the temple to preach. Even though the Apostles risked further imprisonment and persecution, they obeyed God rather than men.
  1. Preaching of Jesus Christ. Gamaliel was the most noted rabbi (teacher) of his time, and his most famous student was Saul (who became Paul, the Apostle). After heeding his counsel, the council (the Sanhedrin) had the Apostles beaten and commanded them not to preach the Gospel. But the Apostles rejoiced over the persecution and “did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. Today, many churches focus on man-centred, seeker-friendly methods of church growth, and end up attracting multitudes of unbelievers to the church. This is in stark contrast to the purity of the church in Acts, where only genuine believers joined the church. Let us pray that our church will be pure and will focus on preaching the Bible faithfully, rather than be concerned with numerical numbers. Also pray that God will add genuine believers to our church.
  1. The gift of performing miracles has ceased, even during the Apostles’ time (2 Cor. 12:12; 1 Tim. 5:23 – Paul did not heal Timothy). The purpose of the miracles was to authenticate the Apostle’s message, and we have it written in the Bible today. Pray that we will be devoted to the teachings of the Bible, rather than be distracted by the demand for miracles.
  1. Sometimes, believers pray that God will remove the persecution that they are facing. However, God is sovereign and He can use any situation in our lives for our good (Rom. 8:28). We ought to pray that God give us the strength to obey Him and persevere during persecution. 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
  1. Even an unbeliever like Gamaliel provided wise counsel that methods that were not according to God’s strategy would eventually fade away. Let us pray that we will not be tempted to pursue church growth methods that are not in accordance to God’s Word. Pray that we will preach the true Gospel only, even though people do not like to hear it or even if we are persecuted for it. Pray that we will be joyful even when persecuted for the sake of the Gospel.

  1. 顺服的重要。前一个晚上,使徒奇迹般地被一个天使从监狱救出,且被告知必要到殿里传道。虽然他们可能会因此再次被捉坐牢或受逼迫,但他们顺从神不顺从人。
  1. 传耶稣基督。迦玛列是当代最知名的拉比(犹太教师),而他最著名的学生是扫罗(后来成为使徒保罗)。公会听取了他的劝诫,将众使徒打了,又吩咐他们不可再传福音。然而,使徒反因受到逼迫感到欢欣,还“不住地教训人,传耶稣是基督”。

  1. 今日,许多教会看重的是以人为本、讨好群众的教会增长模式,结果引来了大批非信徒到教会。这与使徒行传中的纯洁教会截然有别——只有真正信主的才加入教会。让我们祷告我们能有纯洁的教会,并重视忠心传讲圣经,而不是关注数目的增长。也祈求神能给我们的教会增添属实信徒。
  1. 即便在使徒的年代,行神迹奇事的恩赐已停止了(林后12:12;提前5:23—保罗没有医治提摩太)。行神迹奇事的目的是要证实使徒的信息,叫我们能有今日的圣经。祈求我们能忠于圣经的教导,而不是看重神迹奇事的发生。
  1. 有的时候,信徒会祈求神能除去他们所面对的逼迫。可是,神有主权,并能使用我们生命中的境遇叫我们得益(罗8:28)。我们当祈求神给我们力量顺从祂,并在遭逼迫时能忍耐。哥林多前书10:13:“你们所遇见的试探,无非是人所能受的。神是信实的,必不叫你们受试探过于所能受的,在受试探的时候,总要给你们开一条出路,叫你们能忍受得住。”
  1. 即便像迦玛列一样的非信徒都能明智地指出不从神策略的方式必然会消逝。祈求我们不会被诱,叫我们不按神的道追求教会增长。祷告我们只传真正的福音,即便人不爱听,或者我们会因此受到逼迫。也祷告我们为福音的缘故遭逼迫时能欢喜快乐。

Theme                            : The Purity of the Church

 

  1. Solidarity of the church. The first church in Jerusalem, under the teaching of the Apostles, was one where true unity was seen. No one thought of “any of the things that belonged to him was his own” and they “had everything in common”. The rich sold their belongings and brought the proceeds to the Apostles, who distributed to those who were in need. The people trusted the leaders of the church to distribute the offerings as the leaders deemed fit.
  1. Sincerity of the church. When a sinner clearly understood the vastness of the debt he had been forgiven, he would have a genuine love for the Lord and share the blessings that God has given him. The church at this time was filled with genuine believers, since those who did not truly believe in Jesus risked the disapproval of the Jewish leaders (persecution had not started yet) and those who were rich had nothing to gain, and were in a sense losing their earthly wealth.
  1. Sanction of the church. It is not a command to all Christians that they must sell everything and give to the needy in order to follow Christ, or it will simply become a legalistic requirement. When Ananias and Sapphira (tried to) lie to God, they were punished with death and suffered the detriment of their sin. 1 Samuel 15:22 “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.” Those who give sincerely from their hearts, even little, will be pleasing to God, while those who do not give sincerely, even if they give much, do not please God.

 

Praying the Scripture

  1. The first church was exemplary in her unity. Let us pray that our church will also be united, where “no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own”, and that we will share generously with those who are in need.
  1. God wants us to be sincere in our giving. Let us pray for sincere hearts as we give generously to the church. The believers brought their offerings to the Apostles, who distributed to the poor. Therefore, we should also pray that we will learn to trust the church leaders, whom God has appointed, to manage the offerings in a god-honoring way.
  1. Pray that we will not boast in our giving nor seek the approval of man when we give.

  1. 教会的团结。耶路撒冷的首间教会在众使徒的教训下能见真正的团结;“没有一人说他的东西有一样是自己的,都是大家公用”。富裕的变卖财产,并将所得献给使徒,而使徒又照各人的需要分给各人。那时,信徒在分发奉献这事上相信教会领导人的判断。
  1. 教会的诚意。当一个罪人看清主赦自己的罪债有何等庞大时,他会对主有真挚的爱,并将神予他的祝福分享于人。这时候的教会充满了属实的信徒,因为真实信靠耶稣的会遭犹太领袖的拒绝(逼迫未开始),且富裕的也无利益可取,甚至有可能失去地上的财富。
  1. 教会的裁制裁。神没有命令信徒一定要变卖一切给有需要的才能跟从基督;若是如此,这会变成一个与功德挂钩的硬性要求。当亚拿尼亚和撒非喇(尝试)欺哄神的时候,他们因为犯罪而被治死。撒母耳记上15:22说:“耶和华喜悦燔祭和平安祭,岂如喜悦人听从他的话呢?听命胜于献祭,顺从胜于公羊的脂油。”诚心献给神的,即便不多,神必喜悦,但没诚意奉献的,即便给得多,也不会蒙神喜悦。

 

用经文祷告

  1. 基督的首间教会在信徒合一上是典范。让我们祷告我们的教会也会团结一致,叫“没有一人说他的东西有一样是自己的”,总会慷慨与有需要的人分享所有。
  1. 神要我们诚心奉献。让我们祷告我们向教会慷慨奉献时是诚心的。信徒将奉献给予使徒,让他们分发给穷人。因此,我们也要祷告我们会学习信任神所指定的教会领导,以蒙神喜悦的方式管理奉献。
  1. 祈求我们不会在奉献上夸口,或寻人赞同。

Theme                            : How to Face Persecution

 

  1. Be ready to submit to authority. When Peter and John were arrested, they did not put up a struggle. This was a changed Peter, unlike the same Peter who drew his sword and struck off the ear of a man who came to arrest Jesus (John 18:10). Genuine believers should be ready to submit to authority, even if it was imprisonment.
  1. Be ready to submit to the Spirit. When they were questioned, Peter was “filled with the Holy Spirit” as he answered the Jewish leaders. At this point in time, the New Testament was not completed yet, so the Holy Spirit guided Peter’s speech, in fulfilment of Luke 12:11-12.
  1. Be ready to give glory to God. Peter did not boast in his own ability to heal the lame, but gave the glory to God instead. Again, this was a changed Peter, unlike the one who denied Christ three times after His arrest.
  1. Be ready to share the Gospel. Peter seized the opportunity to preach the Gospel to those who were present. Peter would later write in 1 Peter 3:15 “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect”, and Peter exemplified this instruction in Acts 4.
  1. Be ready to obey at all costs. Christians are called to submit to authority, as long as it does not violate the Word of God. However, when the Jewish leaders charged and threatened the Apostles to not share the Gospel, they chose to obey God instead, even if it meant persecution.

 

Praying the Scripture

  1. It is God’s will for Christians to submit to authorities (Rom. 13:1-7), as long as it does not violate the Word of God. Let us pray that we will be submissive to the authorities (e.g. the government). Pray also that when the authorities want us to disobey God’s Word, we will be bold to choose to obey God’s Word at all costs.
  1. When Peter spoke, the New Testament was not completed yet. Today, to be filled with the Spirit means to be filled with the Word of God. Believers now are to be filled with the Word of God (Eph. 5:18; Col. 3:16), which is the only source of truth and guidance for our righteous living (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Pray that we will be diligent to study the Word of God, so that the Holy Spirit can use it to guide us in our lives.
  1. Peter preached the Gospel to the Jewish leaders when they questioned him. Pray that we will seize every opportunity to give glory to God and share the Gospel with people around us, including our superiors.

  1. 预备传福音。彼得抓紧机会向在场的人传福音。他之后在彼得前书3:15写道:“只要心里尊主基督为圣。有人问你们心中盼望的缘由,就要常做准备,以温柔、敬畏的心回答各人。”彼得在这里便做了榜样。
  1. 预备顺服,无论代价。只要基督徒不违背神的道,他们都当顺服掌权者。可是,当犹太领袖吩咐并恐吓使徒,禁止他们传福音的时候,他们则选择听从神的话,即便这意味着他们可能会受到逼迫。


用经文祷告

  1. 神的旨意是要信徒在不违背神之道的同时顺服当下有权柄的(罗13:1-7)。让我们祷告我们会顺服当下有权柄的(如政府),也祈求当这些掌权者要我们违背神的道时,我们能有胆量,不惜代价选择顺服神的话。
  1. 当彼得开口的时候,新约还未完成。今日,被圣灵充满之意就是把基督的道理丰丰富富地存在心里(弗5:18;西3:16)。信徒当如此,因为那是唯一的真理,是我们过正直生活的引导(提后3:16-17)。祈求我们能殷勤学习神的道,叫圣灵能使用它在生活中引导我们。
  1. 彼得受到犹太领袖的盘问时向他们传福音。祈求我们能把握每一个机会将荣耀归于神,并向周遭的人传福音,包括我们的上司。

  1. The prelude of repentance. Beggars considered the temple to be the best place to ask for alms (charitable donations), because pious Jews who came to worship at the temple would want to earn their salvation by doing good works to the poor. The beggar who was lame from birth was hoping to get money from Peter and John, but Peter healed him of his physical defect instead, thus setting the foundation for the preaching of repentance. This healing is another instance where faith of the person is not required, as the beggar did not even asked to be healed.
  1. The preaching of repentance. Peter immediately took the opportunity to give glory to God for the healing, and preached the Gospel of Jesus to the crowd. Once again, Peter did not make the Gospel message into a crowd-pleaser, but he rebuked the Jews for killing the Messiah and wanted a murderer to be released. Peter blatantly pointed out the people’s sin, and commanded them to repent.
  1. The product of repentance. Genuine repentance means that one will turn away from wickedness (3:26) and “turn again” (3:19) towards God. If a sinner simply regrets what he had done (like Judas), but do not turn to God for forgiveness, that is not true repentance. The result of true repentance would be God’s blessing, and the sinner’s “sins may be blotted out”. This means that God will declare the sinner as righteous, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. The purpose of miracles is to authenticate the messenger and the Gospel message, and it can be clearly seen in this passage that Peter did not heal the lame without preaching the Gospel. First of all, we should thank God that He authenticated the Gospel message by granting miracles to accompany the Apostles’ preaching. We should also pray that God will strengthen our faith to believe the Gospel message without witnessing miracles today.
  1. Peter did not take any merit for healing the lame, but immediately gave glory to God, and he also took the opportunity to preach the Gospel. Pray that we will be humble and give glory to God for any achievement, and pray for boldness to use such opportunities to preach the Gospel to the people around us.
  1. Pray that unbelievers, especially our love ones, who hear the Gospel will repent and turn from their wickedness, and “turn again” to God, so that their sins may be blotted out.

  1. 传悔改的信息。彼得立刻利用这机会将医治的荣耀归给神,并向众人传耶稣的福音。这次,彼得仍没有改变福音信息讨听众的喜悦,而是责备犹太人杀了弥赛亚,且要一个杀人犯得着释放。彼得公然地指出众人的罪,并命令他们悔改。
  1. 传悔改信息的成果。真诚的悔改就是人离开罪恶(3:26),归正(3:19)向神。倘若一个罪人仅为所做的事感到后悔(像犹大),但不归向神祈求赦免,那不是真正的悔改。属实悔改的结果就是神降下祝福,叫罪人的“罪得以涂抹”。这表示神会因着耶稣的死与复活宣告罪人为义。

 
用经文祷告

  1. 神迹是应证使徒与福音信息的凭据;若彼得不传福音,他也不必医治那位瘸腿的。首先,我们要感谢神藉着使徒教训人时所行的神迹奇事应证福音信息。我们也要求神能增强我们的信心,即便今日无法见证神迹也要相信福音信息。
  1. 彼得并有没把瘸腿的医治归功于自己,而是立刻将荣耀归给神,并利用机会传福音。祈求我们也能谦卑,在取得任何成就时将荣耀归于神,并祷告我们能有胆量利用这些机会向周围的人传福音。
  1. 祈求非信徒,尤其我们至亲的人,在听到福音时能悔改,离开罪恶,归正向神,叫他们的罪得以涂抹。

Theme                            : The Model of an Ideal Church

 

  1. The characteristics of church growth. The church in Jerusalem was a godly church that had a healthy fear of God (“awe”). Also, it was a caring church, because the believers sold their belongings to help those who were in need. It was also a church where there was unity (“had all things in common”). There was also joy (“glad and generous hearts”) within the believers.
  1. The strategy of church growth. The first church in Jerusalem gives us the godly strategy of church growth. First, the church devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teachings (i.e. the Bible). Second, they were devoted to fellowship. A church is not a building, but a gathering of believers. A church where there is fellowship (in the truth of the Apostles’ teachings) is a true church of God. Third, they obeyed Jesus’ command and were devoted to the breaking of bread (they celebrated the Lord’s Supper to remember His death and resurrection). Last but not least, they were devoted to prayer. They did not depend on their own strength to achieve anything, but depended on God through prayer.
  1. The result of church growth. When the church followed the proper strategy (as above), which is according to God’s will, it finds favour with God, and He will bless the church with numerical growth. It is of utmost importance to please Jesus, who is the head of the church (Eph. 5:23), rather than to please man. When the church pleases God, the result is that it will find favour with man (by first finding favour with God!).

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. The Jerusalem church was a caring church where the believers loved one another and met together every day! 1 John 4:20 – “he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.” The condition of many believers today is even worse, because they only come to church on Sundays, so they cannot love their brother because they also do not see their brother! Let us pray that we will first be committed to meeting regularly and often, and pray that we will love one another in the church. Also pray that we will have joy, especially when we meet together.
  1. The biblical strategy of church growth is to first be devoted to the teachings of the Bible. Love without truth is hypocrisy. Only by knowing and obeying the truth can the church truly grow spiritually. Let us pray that our church will continue to be devoted to the teachings of the Bible.
  1. The church in Jerusalem did not try to please man and change the gospel message in order to have more numbers. When the church found favour with God, He blessed the church with numerical growth. Let us pray that we will please God rather than man, and pray that God will “add to our number day by day those who were being saved.”

  1. 教会成长的策略。耶路撒冷的首间教会给予我们教会成长的敬虔策略。首先,教会必须遵守使徒的教训(即圣经)。第二,他们必须诚实与彼此交接。教会不是一个建筑物,乃是信徒的团聚。照使徒教训之真理中有团契的教会才是神属实的教会。第三,他们遵行耶稣的吩咐,天天掰饼(他们庆祝圣餐,纪念耶稣的死与复活)。最后,他们也恒切祷告。他们不靠自己的力量达成事情,乃藉着祷告依靠神。
  1. 教会成长的结果。当教会按照正确的策略(即神的旨意)成长时,她会蒙神的恩,得到神的祝福,在人数上增长。耶稣是教会之首(弗5:23),所以讨耶稣的喜悦是至关重要的,不是讨人欢心。当教会讨神的喜悦并先有爱神的心时,其结果就是人也有喜爱教会的心。

  1. 耶路撒冷教会是一个信徒彼此关爱,每日聚集的地方!约翰一书4:20说道:“不爱他所看见的弟兄,就不能爱没有看见的神。”今日信徒的属灵状况更糟,因为他们只有周日才到教会;他们无法爱弟兄,因为他们也看不见弟兄!让我们祷告我们首先会立志常常聚会,并祷告我们会在教会中彼此相爱。我们也要祈求尤其在聚集的时候能满心喜乐。
  1. 圣经所记的教会成长策略就是先要专心遵守圣经的教训。没有真理的爱是虚假的。唯有当人认识并遵守真理时,教会才会在灵里成长。让我们祷告我们的教会能持续专心遵守圣经中的教训。
  1. 耶路撒冷的教会并没有尝试讨好人或改变福音信息,叫他们的人数能增长。当教会蒙神的恩时,祂祝福教会在人数增长。让我们祷告我们会讨神而不是人的喜悦,并祈求神能“将得救的人天天加”给我们。

Theme                            : The Age of the Messiah

 

  1. The event. “Pentecost” means “fiftieth” and refers to the Festival of Weeks (Ex. 34:22-23) or Harvest (Lev. 23:16). It was celebrated 50 days after the Passover. Jesus died on the cross on the Day of the Passover, and three days later, He was resurrected. Then He appeared to the Apostles for “forty days” (Acts 1:3), and ascended into heaven. About 1 week later, during Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came and filled the Apostles and the 120 disciples, and they began speaking in tongues. These tongues are clearly known, human languages, because the Jews who were present understood the languages, and there was a list of these languages that were heard (Acts 2:9).
  1. The explanation. Peter explained to those who were present the significance of the event, which marks the beginning of the age of the Messiah. He quoted Joel 2:28-32, and used it to show that Pentecost was a pre-fulfilment of the day of the Lord (the ultimate fulfilment will be during the millennial kingdom). Arguing that God has proven that Jesus is the Messiah by signs and wonders, Peter rebuked the Jews who were present for nailing their Messiah to the cross.
  1. The effect. After the powerful Gospel message by Peter, the Jews who were present were “cut to the heart”, showing grief and remorse that they had crucified their Messiah. Many immediately repented and about three thousand people believed in Jesus on that day.

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. Many Charismatic churches today claim that there is a special kind of tongues which is the language used in heaven between God and His angels. This is a human invention and not taught in the Bible. There is no mention of such angelic language in the Bible, and all the passages where tongues are mentioned indicated that the people understood the languages. Further, when Jesus taught His disciples to pray (Matt. 6:5-14), He did not teach them to pray in unknown tongues! Let us pray that we will not be led astray by novel and unbiblical teachings, but understand what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit (which is to be filled with the Word of God – Eph. 5:18; Col. 3:16).
  1. There are a lot of proofs that Jesus is the Son of God, the promised Messiah (Savior). Let us pray that our faith in Jesus will be strong and not waiver.
  1. Peter did not preach a man-centered gospel, in order to please the listeners. He preached the true Gospel according to the Bible, and rebuked his audience for rejecting and killing their Messiah. However, because God opened their eyes, three thousand people believed and were baptized. Let us pray that we will be bold and faithful to preach the true Gospel, and not try to change it to make it more acceptable to sinners.

主题:弥赛亚的世代

 

  1. 其事件。“五旬节”,即指第五十,也就是七七节(出34:22-23)或收割初熟麦子的时候(申23:16)。这是在逾越节后的第五十天庆祝的。耶稣在逾越节当天死在十字架上,并三日后复活。接着,祂“四十天”向门徒显现(使1:3),然后被接升天。约一周后,即五旬节之日,圣灵降临,充满了众使徒与门徒,叫他们开始用方言说话。这些语言是人知并使用的,因为在场的犹太人晓得这些语言。圣经也列下来当日所听见的语言(使2:9)。
  1. 其解释。彼得向在场的人解释所发之事的意义:这标志了弥赛亚世代的开端。他引用约珥书2:28-32的经文,让众人看见五旬节是主再来之日的预显(最终的应验将在千禧年落实)。彼得也争辩说神已藉着神迹奇事证明耶稣就是弥赛亚,从而责备在场的犹太人将他们的弥赛亚钉十架。

  1. 当今的许多灵恩教会声称圣经中的方言是神与天使在天上所用的特殊语言。这且是人的构想,不是圣经的教导。圣经丝毫没提到所谓的“天使用语”;反之,每当圣经真提到方言时总会说人能理解所说的话。再者,当耶稣教导门徒如何祷告的时候(太6:5-14),祂并没教他们要用不明的语言祷告!让我们祈求我们不会被新颖及不属圣经的教导带走,乃要明白何为被圣灵充满之意(即把基督的道理丰丰富富地存在心里——弗5:18;西3:16)。
  1. 现今有许多凭据能证明耶稣就是神的儿子,是那位被应许的弥赛亚(救主)。让我们祷告我们在耶稣里的信心是稳固的,不会动摇。
  1. 彼得所传的并不是一个以人为本的福音,好讨听众的欢心。他传的是圣经所言的真实福音,并准备他的听众拒绝与杀害他们的弥赛亚。然而,由于神开启了他们的心眼,三千人信主并施洗了。让我们祷告我们能忠心且有胆量传属实的福音,不要因着让罪人更能接受福音信息而做出改变。

  1. United in obedience. The Apostles returned to Jerusalem, just as the Lord commanded, to wait for the coming of the promised Holy Spirit. They did not wander off or engaged in their old trade of fishing, as they did before Jesus’ ascension into heaven (John 21:3).
  1. United in prayer. The Apostles prayed, “in one accord”, together with Jesus’ family (His mother, Mary, and His brothers). Jesus’ brothers (James, Joses, Judas, and Simon – Mark 6:3) did not believe in Jesus before His death (John 7:5), but they soon became believers after witnessing His death and resurrection. Even though they were just new believers, they were united in prayer together with the Apostles.
  1. United in doing God’s will. There is no reason to see Acts 1:18 as a contradiction with Matthew 27:5 (Judas hung himself). The simple explanation is that Judas hung himself on a tree which overlooked a cliff, and the rope or branch broke and his body “burst open” when it fell down the cliff. Peter was the leader of the Apostles, and he quoted from Psalm 69:25 and Psalm 109:8 as the fulfilment of prophecy, so as to choose another Apostle to replace Judas. The Apostles cast lots, which was an Old Testament way of determining God’s will, because the Holy Spirit had not come yet. After the coming of the Holy Spirit, the practice of casting lots became unnecessary. Also note that a true Apostle must be an eyewitness of Jesus’ resurrection.

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. There are many Christians who claim to want to know God’s will about which career to choose, whom to marry, etc., but openly disobey the clear teachings of Scripture. It is the Christian’s responsibility to obey the clear teachings of Scripture, rather than to try to discern the secret will of God (Deut. 29:29). Let us pray that we will obey the Lord’s commands that are clearly reviewed in Scripture (e.g. love one another, giving thanks, submit to authorities, etc.) as we wait for His return.
  1. Christians who do not pray are depending on their own strength to fight the spiritual battle. Also, the Apostles and the believers were praying together (physically) and “with one accord”. Let us pray that many more believers will be committed to coming for church prayer meetings, so that we can pray together and with one accord.
  1. The Apostles were obeying the OT to select someone to replace Judas, rather than their own wisdom or special revelation. The Bible makes clear the qualifications of a true Apostle. Paul was later appointed a true Apostle because Jesus appeared to him. Because of this, there are no true Apostles today. Those claiming to be Apostles today are false teachers who are misleading many. God’s will is clearly reviewed to us in the Bible. We can only know God’s will if we study our bibles carefully. Let us pray that we will be diligent to study God’s Word in order to know His will, and be united in doing God’s will.

  1. 不祷告的基督徒是在依靠自己的力量打属灵的争战。另外,使徒与信徒也在一起“同心合意”地祷告。让我们祷告更多信徒能定意参加教会的祷告会,叫我们能在一起同心合意地祷告。
  1. 当使徒们另选人替代犹大时,他们是在服从旧约的教训,而不是依靠自己的智慧或特别启示。圣经清楚列下了作一个真实使徒当有的资格。今日自称是使徒的显然是引导多人偏离正道的假教师。神的旨意在圣经为我们清楚列下了。唯有当我们严谨查考圣经,我们才能晓得何为神的旨意。让我们祷告我们能殷勤学习神的话,叫我们能得知神的旨意,并在遵行神的旨意上合一。

  1. Our hope is based on Jesus’ teaching. The Book of Acts is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke, which records Jesus’ life and teaching. Jesus chose the Apostles, who taught the things that they heard from Jesus, with the help of the Holy Spirit, who also inspired them to write down these things in the Bible. The Bible that is in our hands today (accurate translations based on the original manuscripts) is the first hand account of the Apostles, and our hope is built on the teachings of Scripture, which is the teaching of Jesus.
  1. Our hope is based on Jesus’ resurrection. After Jesus was resurrected, He “presented Himself alive to them… by many proofs”. The Apostle Paul later wrote that “if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” (1 Cor. 15:14) Jesus’ resurrection shows that He has victory over sin and death, and those who hope in Him will one day be resurrected to eternal glory with Him in heaven. There is no Christianity without the resurrected Christ.
  1. Our hope is based on Jesus’ kingdom. The Apostles asked Jesus if He was going to “restore the kingdom to Israel”. There will come a time when Jesus will rule the world together with the saints. However, His kingdom on earth has already begun spiritually in the hearts of man. At this stage of God’s kingdom, the responsibility of Christians is to be Jesus’ witnesses “to the end of the earth.” It is because of the hope in Jesus’ eternal kingdom that we continue to be witnesses for Him, to spread the Gospel. When Jesus comes again from heaven, “in the same way” that He was taken up, He will establish His kingdom on earth and rule with His saints.

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. Many people claim to believe in Jesus but they do not read the Bible. This is what the Apostle Paul described as “another Jesus” (2 Cor. 11:4), who is not the Jesus of the Bible. True Christianity must be based on God’s Word (the Bible). Let us pray that we will be diligent to study Jesus’ teaching that has been recorded for us in the Bible, so that we will know the true Jesus, the Son of God.
  1. The Apostle Paul also wrote, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” (1 Cor. 15:19) Our hope is in the resurrected Christ, and His promise of eternal life for those who repent from their sins and believe in Him. Let us pray that we will fix our eyes on eternity and heavenly riches, rather than believe in Jesus for earthly benefits such as health and wealth.
  1. Jesus said that it is not for us “to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.” (Acts 1:7) Rather, we should fulfil our responsibility now, which is to be witnesses for Jesus as He establishes His kingdom in the hearts of man. Pray that we will live holy and sanctified lives, in order to be good witnesses, and also pray that we will be bold in proclaiming the Gospel to people around us.

  1. 我们的盼望就建立在耶稣复活的基础上。耶稣复活之后,祂“用许多的凭据将自己活活地……向他们显现”。使徒保罗后来写道:“基督没有复活,我们所传的便是枉然,你们所信的也是枉然。”(林前15:14)耶稣的复活表明祂胜过了罪恶与死亡,且凡信靠祂的也将来日复活,与耶稣在天上得享永恒荣耀。倘若基督没有复活,今日就没有基督教了。
  1. 我们的盼望就建立在耶稣国度的基础上。使徒们问耶稣祂是否即将“复兴以色列国”。有朝一日,耶稣将与众圣徒统治世界。然而,祂在地上的属灵国度已在人心中展开了。在神国度的这一个特定阶段中,基督徒的责任是要见证耶稣“直到地极”。我们之所以能继续作耶稣的见证,能继续传福音的原因是因着自己在耶稣永恒国度里的盼望。当耶稣同往天上去的方式再度来到这世间时,祂将在地上建立自己的国度,与圣徒一同统治。

 
用经文祷告

  1. 许多人自称相信耶稣,但他们不读圣经。这就是使徒保罗所形容的另一个耶稣(林后11:4),因为那不是圣经中的耶稣。真实基督教信仰是基于神之道的(圣经)。让我们祷告我们会殷勤学习耶稣在圣经里为我们所记的教训,叫我们真知道神的圣子耶稣。
  1. 使徒保罗也曾写道:“我们若靠基督只在今生有指望,就算比众人更可怜!”(林前15:19)我们的盼望是在复活的基督里,并祂对凡从罪中悔改信靠祂的人所应许的永生。让我们祷告我们会定睛在永恒并属天的富足上,而不是因着地上的利益如健康与财富相信耶稣。
  1. 耶稣说道:“父凭着自己的权柄所定的时候、日期,不是你们可以知道的。”(使1:7)因此,我们当完成至今的责任,也就是当耶稣在人心中建立祂的国度时为祂作见证。让我们祷告我们会活出圣洁与成圣的生活以作好见证,也祈求我们有胆量向周遭的人宣扬福音。

Luke, the physician (Colossians 4:14), is the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. In both books, Luke begins by addressing a certain “Theophilus”, and Luke’s use of the title “most excellent” (Luke 1:3) suggests that Theophilus was a high ranking Roman official. In Acts 1:1, Luke writes about “the first book”, which refers to the Gospel of Luke. Therefore, Luke-Acts are to be taken as a two volume work by the author (Luke).

The Gospel of Luke is meant to narrate the life and teaching of Jesus. At the end of the Gospel of Luke (24:44-49), Jesus commanded the disciples to proclaim to all the nations about “repentance and forgiveness of sins… beginning from Jerusalem” (24:47). Jesus also told the disciples to “stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (24:49). This refers to “the promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4), which is the Holy Spirit.

The Book of Acts begins by continuing from where the Gospel of Luke ends. The author recaps from the end of Luke, and reminds the readers that Jesus died, rose again, appeared to many people with proofs, and ascended into heaven. Luke also mentions again the instruction of Jesus to the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit, who will empower them to proclaim the gospel “in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) Geographically, starting with Jerusalem as the centre where it all began, the gospel spread to the south (Judea) and north (Samaria), and continues to spread to “the end of the earth”. The entire Book of Acts shows how Acts 1:8 is fulfilled, even to our very day and age.

 
Praying the Scripture

  1. The two volume work of Luke-Acts is not only meant for Theophilus. Rather, it is dedicated to him like the modern-day dedication at the beginning of a book. Let us pray that we will not read the Word of God just like a story book that has no impact on our lives. Pray that we will read the Bible carefully and learn the truths and obey the commands.
  1. Let us thank God for His mercy and grace upon the Gentiles (non-Jews, including us), because He also granted salvation to us by the proclamation of the gospel to the end of the earth.
  1. Some people dream of doing big things for God, to become a missionary to bring the gospel to the remotest jungle, but they do not even share the gospel with people around them. “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?” (Luke 16:10-11) As we read the Book of Acts, let us pray that we will obey the command to proclaim the gospel to all the nations, beginning with people around us in our daily lives, because “one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.”

  1. The Faithfulness of God (1–4). This psalm is attributed to “Ethan” (a Levite, 1 Chron. 15:17–18, and a wise person, 1 Kings 4:31). He lived during David’s time. God is faithful. This means He will absolutely do what He promised to do. If He doesn’t, then He is not perfectly faithful. His reputation/honor will be ruined. The psalmist specifically praises God’s faithfulness to fulfill His covenant with David, that is, to make one of David’s son to rule forever (2 Sam. 7:5–16). This son is the Messiah.
  1. The Sovereignty of the Faithful God (5–18). Not only is God faithful, He is also powerful, therefore He can be faithful to His promises. God rules both heaven and earth (v. 11). In heaven, He is a God who rules above all heavenly beings/angels/sons of God in the heavenly council (cf. Ps. 82:1). These angels rule over the nations, but God rules over them (Col. 1:16). On earth, He rules over the nations. Most likely, the sea in v. 9 is referring to the nations (cf. Rev. 17:15) and Rahab refers to the dominate nation, which was Egypt at the time (cf. Ps. 87:4). Since God rules over heaven (angels) and earth (nations), He is the joy of believers. He is their ultimate shield/protection (v. 18).
  1. The Promises of Davidic Covenant (19–37). This section recounts the details of the Davidic covenant in 2 Sam. 7:12-17 and 1 Chron. 17:11-15. God will be faithful to the Messiah and His offspring/subjects/people. Messiah will be firstborn/preeminent among all kings on earth because He will rule over them (Col. 1:15). God will also be faithful to the Messiah’s people/believers. He will be faithful to guard them so that even when they sin, God will discipline them for the purpose of correcting and restoring them (Heb. 12:6).
  1. Prayer for God to Remember Covenant (38–52). However, in light of king David’s current setback (perhaps referring to David’s temporary exile by his son Absalom), the psalmist’s faith in God’s faithfulness is weakened. How can God fulfill His promise if David is exiled or defeated? Therefore he prays for God to be faithful and fulfill His covenant with David.

 

Praying the Scripture

God will always be faithful and fulfill His promise. It is easily for heaven and earth to disappear than for God to break a promise (Matt. 5:17-18). However, God’s plan may not unfold as we expect. Like the psalmist, we will wonder how God will fulfill His promise if king David himself is currently defeated. It is natural for humans to doubt whenever there are setbacks. But God is always faithful and He works in ways that we don’t expect, just as Jesus’ disciples had doubts when they saw their Messiah crucified. Therefore, to overcome human weakness, it is important for believers to have faith in God’s promise instead of our current situation. This is why hope (which means faith about God’s future promise) is so important. It is our hope that strengthens our resolve to follow Jesus, despite trails, setbacks and whenever you feel like God is not going to win (1 Peter 1:13). Pray that you will grow in your hope of your inheritance, that is, God’s kingdom on earth when Jesus rules over the nations from Israel. Hope is important to overcome human weakness. Pray for God to strengthen your hope/faith about the future.

  1. 信实之神的主权(5-18)。神不但是信实的,也有大能,因此祂能忠于祂的应许。神掌管天地(11节)。在天,祂是掌管所有天庭之灵的神(参:诗82:1)。这包括管理列国的天使,而神统治它们(西1:16)。在地,祂治理列国。第九节的“海”大有可能指的是诸国(参:启17:15),而拉哈伯指的是主导国,即当代的希腊(参:诗87:4)。既然神掌管天(天使)地(列国),祂是信徒的喜乐。祂是信徒最大的盾牌/保护(18节)。
  1. 大卫之约的应许(19-37)。这段经文重述了记载在撒母耳记下7:12-17与列王纪上17:11-15中有关大卫之约的细节。神必终于弥赛亚以及祂的后裔/臣子/子民。弥赛亚将是万君之首,因为祂要统治他们(西1:15)。神也要以信实对待弥赛亚的民/信徒。祂会信实地保守他们,叫他们即便犯了罪,也要受到管教,使他们能改正过来,复兴他们。
  1. 求神纪念约定(38-52)。然而,由于大卫正面临危机(或许是因押沙龙而遭遇的暂时流亡),诗人对神的信心变为软弱。倘若大卫遭流亡或被击败,神要如何成就自己的应许呢?因此他祈求神忠于并成就祂与大卫所立的约。


用经文祷告

神由始至终是信实的,必然成就祂的应许。相比之下,天地废去比神食言更容易(太5:17-18)。可是,神的计划不一定按我们的想法展开。我们与诗人一样,会怀疑若大卫当时遭击败,神会如何成就祂的应许。当眼前有障碍时,我们很容易质疑神。但神一直都是信实的,并以出乎意料的方式行事,就如耶稣的门徒看到他们的弥赛亚被钉十字架的时候,也质疑神。因此,为要胜过人类的软弱,信徒要站立在神的应许里,而不是所遇的处境。这就是为什么盼望(即对神有关未来之应许的信心)如此重要。我们的盼望能使我们立志跟随耶稣,尽管途中遇到种种挫折,或认为神不会胜出(彼前1:13)。祷告你会在你基业中的盼望增长,也就是当耶稣从以色列统治万国后在地上的国度。盼望能胜过人类的软弱。祷告神会坚定你对未来的盼望/信心。
